DIY: Save the Dates

Looking for a cute 'do it yourself' idea for your save the dates?  Check out what we did for ours....

We decided to do our own save the dates as opposed to ordering them one of the various stationary vendors.  We did this so we could add our own personal, tie in our theme, and to save money.  I mean who does not want to save money these days? Especially when it comes to a wedding.  :-)

In order to understand our 'save the dates' you must know our theme.  Our wedding theme is based off of two different concepts.  They are the following:
  • Butterflies -  Butterflies signify a new beginning.   Our marriage is a new chapter in both of our lives, hence a new beginning together.
  • "Live, laugh, love" - A simple quote, but yet it says just so much.  It just also happens to be my favorite quote.
For our 'save the dates' we focused on the first part of our theme which was butterflies, so we made sure they were present within our design concept.  We plan to incorporate the 'live, laugh, love' theme at another time, and eventually will tie the two themes together.

Just like any other part of our wedding we had a budget for our save the dates.  Our budget was $100.  Yes, we know this is a rather low budget, but compared to the other aspects of our wedding we felt this was a reasonable amount.  As we would be able to allocate our money  elsewhere within our wedding budget.  We compared the cost of doing our own 'save the dates' as opposed to ordering them from a stationary vendor.  We would have paid just about twice the amount ( if not more), and this did not include postage.  After we realized that we would save money, it was definitely an easy  decision to make.

Here is how we created our own save the dates:
Budget: $100

What you need:
  • Butterfly  stamp from your local craft store
  • Martha Stewart butterfly hole punch
  • Purple ink pad
  • 8.5 x 11 card stock pack from your local craft store
  • Magnet strips
  • Coral card stock from your local craft store
  • Glue craft stick
  • Butterfly #10 envelopes (we purchased our from Staples)
  • Avery shipping labels
  • Free downloadable calender template from Wedding Chicks

Our steps:
  1. Download the free save the date template from the Wedding Chicks blog. Since the template only provided the calendar month, we added a heart to show the actual date of our wedding. I was able to add both the our picture and the heart by using Word.
  2. Create a frame with the purple card stock paper and glue the template to the frame.
  3. Create several butterfly hole punch-outs using the Martha Stewart hole puncher, glue the punch-outs to the card stock paper.
  4. Place two magnet strips on the backside of the template.
  5. Download the Avery shipping label template in Word, and create the different labels.  Once completed place the labels on the labels on the envelope.
  6. On the back of each envelope place place a butterfly stamp.

Final Look:

I definitely enjoyed creating these save the dates with the help of my fiance.  It was a great way for us to collaborate and combine our creativity together. There will definitely be more DIY projects to come, stay tuned!
